One of the critical steps in operating a poultry and egg facility is thorough cleaning of all surfaces and equipment, which is conducted during sanitation. Facilities must follow stringent guidelines to sanitize their operations and comply with federal and customer guidelines for preventing microbial contamination of their products. This crucial operation of facilities does not come without the potential for risk to the workers.

Sanitation workers encounter potential exposures to strong chemicals used for sanitizing the environment, high-temperature and high-pressure water used in the cleaning process, and the close contact and cleaning of production equipment. These elements pose a possible, considerable risk for significant injuries and illnesses. Providing education on risks is vital for all workers with an active role in sanitation. Sanitation Safety for the Poultry Industry is a certification program designed for all segments of the poultry industry, ensuring safe and sanitized working conditions for the production of poultry and egg products.

Led by USPOULTRY, a team of industry specialists and Georgia Tech Safety, Health, and Environmental Services professionals developed and reviewed the training and certification, which is solely focused on sanitation safety. The training is the first third-party certification to cover sanitation safety. USPOULTRY offers this training to member companies and sanitation contract company members doing business with USPOULTRY members.

Training Certification can be obtained by attending a train-the-trainer course performed by an existing certified sanitation safety trainer. USPOULTRY members holding a current trainer certification, obtained by attending the train-the-trainer course, are eligible to conduct the Sanitation Safety for the Poultry Industry training program. Each attendee will receive training materials and participate in a training session with knowledge checks throughout the workshop. Workers will receive a Certificate of Completion upon completing the training.

The certification course provides in-depth, industry-specific training on topics like Introduction to Sanitation and OSHA, Safety and Health Programs/ Management, Workplace Task Analysis, Machine Guarding, Lockout Tagout, Electrical Safety, Hazard Communication, Personal Protective Equipment, Slips, Trips, and Falls (Walking and Working Surfaces), Ergonomics, and Confined Spaces.

This certification program is not intended to replace a company’s existing safety and health program, but to supplement and support an industry-wide stance on the importance of sanitation safety. Constant vigilance of risks is needed by all industry workers, so that we all can provide safe and wholesome poultry and egg products to the world.
